    Summary Points

    1. Mostik has developed a novel way for AI models to communicate directly through their mathematical weights, enabling more efficient collaboration without text output.
    2. Their approach allows smaller models to leverage the strengths of larger models, boosting performance at a fraction of the cost.
    3. This technique has already led to top rankings in AI competitions and can facilitate specialized models in fields like biology and physics.
    4. Experts see this method as a promising step toward combining models effectively, potentially transforming AI development by moving beyond simply scaling larger models.

    AI Models Communicating Without Words

Recently, a group of Russian mathematicians showed how AI models can talk to each other without using words. Instead of traditional text, they use the numbers inside the models. These numbers are called weights. They tell the AI how to transform a prompt into an answer. This method allows different AI models to share information more quickly and easily. As a result, smaller models can become smarter when connected this way. This new way of communication is like a secret language among machines, making AI systems work better together.

How It Works and Its Benefits

The startup behind this idea is called Mostik, which means “bridge” in Russian. The team built a system that connects a big model with a smaller one. For example, they linked a massive Chinese model with 753 billion parameters to a smaller, 4-billion-parameter model. The hybrid system cost less to run, but still performed halfway between the two. This shows that combining models like this improves results without needing huge systems. Experts say this approach is faster and cheaper than traditional methods, which involve feeding outputs from one model into another through text. Instead, Mostik’s method lets models share information directly through their mathematical weights.

    Potential Impact and Future Uses

Some experts believe this technique could change how AI develops next. Instead of focusing on making one giant model, they suggest pairing specialized models for different tasks. This could include biology, physics, or other fields. Smaller, focused models could work together with larger models to improve accuracy and efficiency. This approach also helps open-source models compete with big companies’ proprietary systems. While some say finding a common language for AI models is challenging, Mostik’s method offers a new way to build smarter, faster AI without needing massive resources. It’s an exciting step forward in AI research and application.
