Researchers Unveil Neuromorphic Exposure Control System for Enhanced Machine Vision
A research team at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has made a significant advancement in machine vision. Led by Professors Jia Pan and Yifan Evan Peng, the team collaborated with researchers at the Australian National University. Together, they developed a neuromorphic exposure control (NEC) system to improve vision in extreme lighting conditions. Their work recently appeared in the journal Nature Communications.
Traditional exposure control systems struggle with sudden changes in lighting, such as when a vehicle exits a dark tunnel into bright sunlight. These systems often rely on feedback loops, leading to delays. The NEC system addresses this challenge by integrating event cameras. These cameras capture brightness changes as fast events. In fact, the system processes 130 million events per second using a single CPU.
“Much like our pupils react to changes in light, NEC mimics the synergy of human vision,” explained Mr. Shijie Lin, the article’s first author. He emphasized the system’s ability to streamline image processing by fusing event streams with physical light metrics.
The researchers validated the NEC system across several key applications.
First, in autonomous driving, it improved detection accuracy by 47.3% in bright conditions following tunnel exits. Second, it enhanced hand tracking under surgical lights by 11% in augmented reality applications. In 3D reconstruction, the system maintained performance in overexposed settings, outperforming traditional methods. Additionally, it ensured clear visualization for medical assistants during surgeries, regardless of changing light levels.
