    Fast Facts

    1. SPHEREx and PUNCH will operate in a Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit, allowing continuous observation of the celestial sky and a comprehensive sky survey in six months.

    2. SPHEREx will start science operations approximately one month post-launch, following the cooling of its telescope and essential checks, while PUNCH will maintain a clear view around the Sun.

    3. The launch of SPHEREx and PUNCH is managed by NASA’s Launch Services Program from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

    4. Data from the SPHEREx mission, led by a collaborative team from multiple institutions, will be publicly accessible at the NASA-IPAC Infrared Science Archive.

NASA is set to launch its SPHEREx space telescope, designed to create a comprehensive map of the cosmos. The mission will offer valuable insights into the universe’s origins and evolution.

SPHEREx will operate in a Sun-synchronous orbit alongside the PUNCH spacecraft. Both will circle Earth approximately every 98 minutes. This unique position allows SPHEREx to capture a 360-degree view of the sky. As Earth moves around the Sun, the telescope will gradually reveal almost the entire celestial sphere in just six months. Such thorough observation enhances our understanding of space.

About four days after launch, SPHEREx will shed its protective cover, exposing its telescope lens. The mission team aims to start scientific operations a little over a month later. Transitioning from initial setup to functional use involves cooling the telescope and conducting essential checks.

NASA’s Launch Services Program, based in Florida, is responsible for the launch. BAE Systems constructed the telescope and spacecraft bus, showcasing advancements in technology and engineering. A diverse team of scientists will analyze the data, collaborating from various institutions across the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan.

SPHEREx will contribute to significant technological development. Its dataset will be publicly accessible, fostering collaboration and innovation in astrophysics research. This mission not only expands scientific knowledge but also enhances quality of life by inspiring future generations to explore the universe.
