Ranchi Bids Farewell to Chartered Bicycle Scheme
Ranchi Smart City Corporation Limited (RSCCL) will end its chartered bicycle scheme this month. This program, launched in 2019, aimed to encourage eco-friendly transportation. However, the initiative faced challenges, including declining infrastructure support and issues with maintenance. Despite having over 130,000 registered users, the daily usage fell to around 300 bikers. RSCCL CEO Amit Kumar explained that the contract with the managing company has expired, prompting the decision to discontinue the service.
The bicycle program started with 600 bicycles and 60 stations but expanded to 700 bicycles and 90 stations due to strong demand, particularly from students. Nevertheless, many docking stations are now idle because of reduced patronage. “The bicycles are still operational, but they will be removed from the roads once the end of the contract is officially implemented,” Kumar added. The initiative initially offered free rides for the first hour and low-cost subscription plans, but interest has waned over time.

Officials recognize the importance of finding alternatives for urban mobility. Kumar mentioned they are exploring options better suited to the city’s current needs.
