    Four Lincoln Laboratory Technologies Win Five 2023 R&D 100 Awards

    MIT Lincoln Laboratory recently celebrated a significant achievement. Four groundbreaking technologies earned five prestigious 2023 R&D 100 Awards. This recognition highlights innovations that have transitioned into practical use or are available for commercialization.

    One standout technology, Noncontact Laser Ultrasound (NCLUS), revolutionizes medical imaging. Unlike traditional ultrasound, which requires contact, NCLUS employs a skin-safe laser to gather ultrasound images without touching patients. This method not only improves accuracy but also opens new possibilities for imaging burn victims or patients in challenging situations.

    Another award-winning tool is Puckboard. This web-based application enhances crew scheduling for the U.S. Air Force. Airmen used to rely on manual scheduling methods; now, Puckboard’s intelligent algorithms streamline the process. It benefits over 24,000 users and saves valuable time, allowing personnel to focus on critical missions.

    The Security/Cyber Module (SCM) End Cryptographic Unit represents a leap in data protection for uncrewed systems. As military technology evolves, ensuring secure communication is vital. This compact device simplifies the certification process for sensitive data transmission, enhancing system safety.

    Finally, the new quantum memory technology addresses long-standing challenges in quantum networking. It combines essential capabilities in a single module, enabling reliable communication across separate quantum systems. By making this technology scalable, researchers hope to expand its applications in advanced quantum processing.

    In total, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has garnered 86 R&D 100 Awards in the last 14 years. Director Eric Evans remarked on the lab’s high rate of unclassified technology transition, emphasizing its role in changing the world through innovation. A gala celebrating the award winners is scheduled for Nov. 16 in San Diego, California.
