    Summary Points

    1. Enhanced Preflight Planning: The U.S. must adopt advanced preflight planning to ensure safety for the future of advanced air mobility, with NASA developing crucial tools for risk mitigation.

    2. Integrated Risk Assessment: Efficient risk assessment tools enable drone and air taxi operators to check flight plans for potential dangers, streamlining safety processes.

    3. Successful Demonstration: A partnership between NASA and ResilienX showcased the integration of NASA’s services, allowing operators to submit flight plans and quickly assess risks before takeoff.

    4. Collaboration for Safety: The project, under NASA’s System-Wide Safety initiative, aims to advance safety systems for automated aircraft, benefitting partners like the U.S. Air Force and enhancing future airspace operations.

NASA is advancing air mobility safety by testing tools to assess drone operations over urban areas. As cities look toward a future filled with air taxis and drones, effective preflight planning becomes increasingly vital. These tools aim to identify and mitigate risks before the drones even take off.

In June, NASA partnered with ResilienX Inc. to demonstrate how these safety tools can be integrated into commercial systems. Researchers conducted tests at ResilienX’s facility in Syracuse, New York. Flight operators used NASA’s services to submit plans, receive risk assessments, and decide whether to proceed or alter their routes. This rapid evaluation process significantly enhances safety for both passengers and people on the ground.

The three tools developed by NASA focus on assessing the unique threats posed by highly automated aircraft flying at low altitudes in urban environments. This initiative stems from a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research contract, building on previous work focused on weather-related risks. The collaboration not only benefits the partners but also enhances safety across projects involving the U.S. Air Force and regional operators.

This innovative work falls under NASA’s System-Wide Safety project as part of its Airspace Operations and Safety program. The agency aims to deliver crucial data and recommendations to guide the evolution of future air taxis and drones. Ultimately, these advancements promise a safer, more efficient airspace—transforming how we travel in and around our cities.
