    Glaciologists have monitored the Alsek Glacier for several decades. Historically, it terminated near Gateway Knob, roughly 3 miles to the west of Prow Knob. Over the years, the glacier has continued to retreat, influencing the landscape around it.

    Alsek Lake itself has expanded from about 17 square miles (45 square kilometers) in 1984 to approximately 29 square miles (75 square kilometers) today. This growth comes from both the melting of Alsek Glacier and additional meltwater from surrounding proglacial lakes.

    The newly formed island covers about 2 square miles (5 square kilometers). Scientists estimate it emerged between July 13 and August 6, 2025. Furthermore, the glacier’s separation from Prow Knob could lead to increased instability. As the glacier continues to retreat, researchers warn it may become more prone to calving, where large ice chunks break off into the lake.
