    Top Highlights

    1. Breakthrough Quantum Prototype: The USTC team developed the Zuchongzhi-3, a superconducting quantum computing prototype with 105 qubits, achieving speeds 10¹⁵ times faster than the fastest supercomputer and one million times faster than Google’s latest results.

    2. Quantum Supremacy Enhanced: This achievement marks a significant leap in quantum computation, surpassing Google’s previously established ‘quantum supremacy’ milestone, where tasks now take mere seconds instead of millennia.

    3. Exceptional Performance Metrics: The Zuchongzhi-3 achieved a coherence time of 72 microseconds and high fidelity rates (99.90% for single qubits), enabling complex computations beyond the capability of classical supercomputers.

    4. Future Research Directions: The USTC team is advancing in areas like quantum error correction and simulation, aiming to further enhance their architecture and integrate more complex quantum algorithms for future applications.

New Quantum Processor Surpasses Supercomputers by Quadrillions

A research team from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has announced a significant breakthrough in quantum computing. Their new prototype, Zuchongzhi-3, operates with 105 qubits and 182 couplers. This technology achieves speeds 1,015 times faster than the world’s fastest supercomputer. Remarkably, it also outpaces Google’s latest quantum results by one million times.

Researchers emphasize that this advancement marks a pivotal step toward enhancing quantum computing performance. The term “quantum supremacy” describes the moment when quantum computers solve problems beyond the capabilities of classical supercomputers.

In 2019, Google’s 53-qubit Sycamore processor notably completed a random sampling task in 200 seconds. This task would have taken about 10,000 years for the fastest supercomputer. However, in 2023, the USTC team executed the same task in just 14 seconds, utilizing over 1,400 A100 GPUs. Meanwhile, with advancements in classical algorithms, the Frontier supercomputer completed it in only 1.6 seconds.

Earlier landmark achievements include the USTC’s Jiuzhang photonic quantum prototype and Zuchongzhi-2, which demonstrated quantum supremacy in different contexts. In 2023, Jiuzhang-3 performed computations 10¹⁶ times faster than classical counterparts. Additionally, Google’s 67-qubit Sycamore showcased similar advancements in late 2024.

Zuchongzhi-3 features impressive technical specifications: a coherence time of 72 microseconds and single-qubit gate fidelity of 99.90%. These attributes enable more complex operations. In fact, Zuchongzhi-3 was evaluated through an 83-qubit, 32-layer random circuit sampling task. The results surpassed the world’s most powerful supercomputer by 15 orders of magnitude.

Moving forward, the USTC team aims to explore various areas, including quantum error correction and quantum simulation. They are particularly focused on enhancing their error correction capabilities by integrating surface code distance. Plans specify raising the distance to 9 and 11 for better quantum bit manipulation.

This research draws significant attention from the academic community. Reviewers applaud the work, calling it a “benchmarking” advancement in superconducting quantum technology. The upgrade from the previous Zuchongzhi-2 has set a new standard for future quantum devices.

The implications of this research stretch far beyond academic interest. As companies and researchers strive for practical quantum computing applications, technology will likely witness transformative changes across multiple industries.
