    Quick Takeaways

    1. Government Shutdown Impact: Ongoing scientific activities aboard the International Space Station (ISS) continued this week, but updates have largely ceased due to the U.S. government shutdown.

    2. Typhoon Observations: Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui observed two typhoons from the ISS, providing real-time updates on their conditions via social media.

    3. Preparations for HTV-X: Yui and his crew are preparing for the arrival of Japan’s next-generation cargo vehicle, HTV-X, utilizing the ISS’s Canadarm2 for the mission.

    4. Current Crew Stats: As of October 10, seven astronauts from various countries are aboard the ISS, with two crew spacecraft and four cargo spacecraft docked, marking nearly 25 years of continuous human presence in space.

Japanese Astronaut Eyes Typhoons from Orbit

On Oct. 6, 2025, the activities aboard the International Space Station (ISS) continued despite the U.S. government shutdown. Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui provided unique observations from his vantage point in space. He shared images of two active typhoons on social media, capturing the attention of weather enthusiasts.

Yui noted that Typhoon 22’s eye appeared somewhat unclear, yet it retained its intensity. Meanwhile, he described Typhoon 23 as distant but swirling with thick rain clouds. “Stay safe while keeping up with the latest typhoon information!” he urged followers. His posts reminded everyone of the powerful forces of nature.

Transitioning from weather observation, Yui also focused on critical maintenance tasks on the ISS. He collaborated with his Expedition 73 crewmates to prepare for the arrival of Japan’s upcoming cargo ship, the HTV-X. “Preparations to welcome HTV-X to the ISS are steadily progressing,” he reported. The Canadarm2 robotic arm, which plays a vital role in capturing spacecraft, underwent tests to ensure readiness.

Currently, seven astronauts reside aboard the ISS, including members from NASA and Roscosmos. The ISS continues to serve as a hub for international cooperation, scientific research, and technological advancements. In fact, the station has been continuously crewed for nearly 25 years, showcasing humanity’s commitment to exploring space.

Overall, Yui’s experiences highlight not just the beauty of Earth’s weather from space but also the ongoing developments in technology that support space missions. As astronauts observe weather patterns and work on equipment, they contribute to a greater understanding of our planet and enhance future missions. By making these observations, they also foster global awareness about climate and safety.
