    Quick Takeaways

    1. Inspiration as a Role Model: María Rosa Preciado Rivas, a PhD student at the University of Waterloo, aims to inspire future female scientists, having lacked such role models during her upbringing.

    2. Engaging Outreach: By introducing quantum science to young enthusiasts and their parents, she enhances the impact of outreach activities, bridging knowledge gaps in both generations.

    3. Broader Perspective: Through her outreach efforts, Preciado Rivas expands her own understanding of scientific communication, allowing her to effectively convey complex concepts to a wider audience.

    4. Passion for Quantum Mechanics: Initially confused by quantum information science, her coursework at Waterloo transformed her perspective, igniting a passion for the field that now guides her research on the interplay between quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Graduate Student Volunteers Recognized for Scientific Outreach Contributions

WATERLOO, Ont. — Graduate student María Rosa Preciado Rivas received recognition for her significant contributions to scientific outreach at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). Since joining IQC’s outreach team in 2023, she has actively inspired young science enthusiasts.

Importantly, Preciado Rivas aims to fill a gap she experienced during her education. She first encountered female scientists during her undergraduate studies at Yachay Tech University in Ecuador. Now, she wants to be a role model for budding scientists who might feel isolated in the field.

Her outreach efforts extend beyond children. By introducing quantum science to parents, she enhances community engagement. “It feels like I’m making a difference,” Preciado Rivas said. She emphasized the value of science communication skills, noting that these skills reach beyond public interaction. They help her explain complex concepts to peers and professors who may not specialize in her research area.

As a PhD student in the Applied Math department, Preciado Rivas never envisioned a career in quantum information science. Initially, she found the discipline daunting. However, advanced courses at the University of Waterloo clarified her understanding. “Having the right tools made me fall in love with quantum,” she said, indicating how this shift propelled her into a new field of study.

Now in her final year, her research investigates the intersection of quantum mechanics and general relativity. She hopes her findings can highlight the potential advantages of quantum computers over classical systems. By merging outreach with her academic pursuits, Preciado Rivas illustrates how community engagement can enhance scientific understanding, ultimately advancing technology development.
