WATERLOO, Ont. — Graduate student María Rosa Preciado Rivas received recognition for her significant contributions to scientific outreach at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). Since joining IQC’s outreach team in 2023, she has actively inspired young science enthusiasts.
Importantly, Preciado Rivas aims to fill a gap she experienced during her education. She first encountered female scientists during her undergraduate studies at Yachay Tech University in Ecuador. Now, she wants to be a role model for budding scientists who might feel isolated in the field.
Her outreach efforts extend beyond children. By introducing quantum science to parents, she enhances community engagement. “It feels like I’m making a difference,” Preciado Rivas said. She emphasized the value of science communication skills, noting that these skills reach beyond public interaction.
