    Fast Facts

    1. Closing Bell Ceremony: NASA’s team behind the SPHEREx space telescope will ring the New York Stock Exchange closing bell on April 22, marking a significant milestone in their mission.

    2. Mission Objective: SPHEREx aims to explore the origins of the universe by studying over 450 million galaxies and 100 million stars in the Milky Way, enhancing our understanding of cosmic evolution and searching for life’s building blocks.

    3. Launch Success: The telescope successfully launched on March 11 from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and its initial images confirmed operational readiness.

    4. Collaborative Effort: Team members from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and BAE Systems Inc. are honored for their contributions to the telescope and its main structure, showcasing collaborative innovation in space exploration.

Members of the team behind NASA’s newest space telescope will ring the New York Stock Exchange closing bell at 4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 22. This event highlights their work on the SPHEREx mission. SPHEREx stands for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer.

After launching on March 11 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, SPHEREx is set to transform our understanding of the universe. The telescope will soon collect data on over 450 million galaxies and 100 million stars in the Milky Way. Such insights will enhance our knowledge of cosmic evolution and search for life’s key ingredients.

The observatory’s initial images confirm that all systems are functioning correctly. This puts SPHEREx on track to map the entire sky. Bell ringers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, along with team members from BAE Systems Inc., will join the ceremony. BAE Systems contributed to building the telescope and its spacecraft structure, known as the bus.

The New York Stock Exchange plans to share a recording of the ceremony on YouTube after the event. This collaboration between aerospace and finance showcases how technological advancements can inspire public interest and investment in scientific exploration.
