    Quick Takeaways

    1. Camera Performance Issues: Despite initial doubts about image quality stemming from significant purple fringing on the ultrawide camera, subsequent tests confirmed that this problem is resolved in retail units, though heavy-handed software processing continues to undermine photo quality overall.

    2. Powerful Specs but Inconsistent Battery Life: The Honor Magic 8 Pro boasts impressive hardware with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a vibrant 6.71-inch display; however, its battery life remains average despite a substantial 6,270 mAh capacity.

    3. Competitive Price Concerns: Priced at £1,099 (~$1,480), the phone’s performance, especially in camera processing, does not justify the flagship cost compared to rivals like the Oppo Find X9 Pro and OnePlus 15.

    4. Software and Support Advantages: The device runs on Android 16 with Magic OS 10, includes various AI features, and promises seven years of software and security updates, ensuring longevity in usability; yet, this does not fully compensate for its camera shortcomings.

Honor Magic 8 Pro: A Disturbing Camera Experience

The Honor Magic 8 Pro, touted as Honor’s flagship phone for 2026, carries a hefty price tag of £1,099. Unfortunately, it disappointed me greatly, primarily due to its camera issues. Initially, I discovered significant purple fringing in images taken with the ultrawide camera. Although Honor promptly sent replacement units, the imaging problems persisted in a different form. The camera hardware boasts impressive specifications, including a 50-megapixel main camera and a 200-megapixel telephoto lens with 3.7x optical zoom. However, Honor’s heavy-handed software processing largely diminishes the camera’s potential. While some photos appear decent, many suffer from unnatural color saturation and a lack of detail, especially in challenging lighting situations.

Despite these drawbacks, the Magic 8 Pro offers excellent hardware under the hood. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor drove impressive benchmark scores and supported fluid gaming experiences. However, the phone’s 6,270-mAh battery provided only average performance. Additionally, while it supports rapid 100W wired charging, it struggled to deliver the kind of battery longevity I’d expect from a premium device. Ultimately, for anyone seeking superior camera performance, exploring alternatives may be wise.

Display and Software: Bright Spots Amidst Disappointment

On a brighter note, the Magic 8 Pro features a vibrant 6.71-inch display, making it user-friendly even in bright sunlight. The dynamic refresh rate, ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, enhances both gaming and video experiences. Furthermore, the phone runs on Android 16 with Honor’s Magic OS 10, integrating various AI features designed to enrich usability. For instance, the AI Photos Agent offers imaginative editing options.

Despite these advantages, the overall package feels less remarkable against competitors. Users seeking a solid camera experience and more consistent battery life might find better value elsewhere, such as with the Oppo Find X9 Pro for photography enthusiasts. The Magic 8 Pro presents a mixed bag of capabilities, showcasing the potential of its hardware while being held back by software that requires further refinement.
