    MIT-led AI and physics institute gains NSF renewal

    The National Science Foundation (NSF) has renewed support for the MIT-led Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions (IAIFI). The institute will receive close to $5 million annually for the next five years, up from $4 million. This renewal marks a new chapter for IAIFI, which was launched in 2020 to explore how AI can transform physics and vice versa. The institute brings together researchers from MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, Tufts, and Boston University. Its goal is to develop new ways of doing science by combining AI and physics through collaborative research.

    Advances in Physics and AI

    Since its start, IAIFI has shown how machine learning can speed up physics discoveries. For example, in particle physics, AI techniques help analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider in real time. In nuclear physics, AI models help study how fundamental particles interact. AI also improves the detection of cosmic events, like gravitational waves, through the LIGO experiment. On the other side, physics ideas are shaping AI systems to be more reliable and easier to understand. Researchers develop new algorithms that include knowledge of physical laws, making AI more trustworthy and effective.

    Building a New Generation of Scientists

    A vital part of IAIFI’s work is training future researchers. Its fellowship program supports early-career scientists working at the intersection of AI and physics. Many former fellows now hold faculty roles or work in AI companies. IAIFI also hosts an annual summer school that draws hundreds of students interested in physics and AI. MIT has created new educational programs inspired by IAIFI, including combined PhD tracks and online courses. The institute hosts workshops and public events to connect experts and share discoveries, fueling a growing community dedicated to advancing the role of AI in physics research.
