When scientists examined it, they discovered something very unique—antennae with two kinds of branches on each segment. This find offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of fireflies and their relatives. It shows that some features once existed, but are now missing from modern beetles. Such discoveries help us understand how insects developed specialized senses over millions of years.

    What Makes This Beetle’s Antennae Special?

    The beetle’s antennae are unlike any others found in extinct or living insects. Each of its middle eight segments has two pairs of branches, one longer and coarser, the other shorter and finer. These branches likely helped the beetle sense its environment better. More branches mean more surface area covered in tiny hairs. These hairs, called sensilla, catch airborne chemicals for the insect to smell. The elaborate antennae suggest this beetle relied heavily on scent to find mates and navigate. In fact, its antennae indicate that it probably hunted for mates through smell rather than sight.

    Dual Functions: Light and Scent in Early Fireflies

    The amber also preserves a light organ on the beetle’s underside. Today’s fireflies use glow to communicate, attract mates, or defend themselves. But this ancient beetle may have used its glow mainly as a warning to predators. Its antennae and light suggest it chased mates primarily by scent, not flashing lights. Interestingly, in modern fireflies, flashing and scent signals usually work separately. This beetle’s traits hint that early firefly relatives might have combined both signals for different purposes. Its unique features reveal a stage in evolution when beetles explored different ways to survive and reproduce, a development that shaped fireflies as we know them today.
