Brussels Moves to Mandate Non-Algo Feed—Myspace Still Selling It

    Top Highlights

    1. The Vanderhook brothers plan to relaunch Myspace with nostalgic features.
    2. The platform will prioritize a chronological feed and minimal algorithms.
    3. Regulatory pressures pose challenges, as compliance may become standard worldwide.
    4. Nostalgia won’t attract young users; generational shifts threaten its future success.

A Fresh Start with No Algorithm

Myspace plans to relaunch with a simple idea: a feed that shows posts in the order they are posted. The platform emphasizes features from its early days, like Top 8 friends and profile songs. The key difference is a chronological feed with no algorithms. This approach aims to counteract the endless scrolling and engagement traps of modern social media. The Vanderhook brothers, owners of Myspace, see this as an antidote to the fatigue many users feel from platforms that prioritize likes and shares over genuine connection. They believe that returning to a straightforward, time-based feed could attract users who want a more authentic experience.

However, launching an anti-algorithm social network in 2026 faces challenges. European regulators are already pushing companies like Meta to remove autoplay and infinite scroll features. They want platforms to reduce addictive design elements, especially for children. If these rules become standard across Europe, Myspace’s selling point—its no-algorithm feed—may no longer stand out. Instead, it could become a legal minimum for competitors, making it harder for Myspace to differentiate itself.

The Challenge of Audience and Competition

Nostalgia might not be enough to grow Myspace again. Its original users, now in their 30s and 40s, have moved on. They are less likely to join a new platform. The focus shifts to younger generations, like Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who don’t have memories of the old Myspace. These groups face strict regulations, especially in Europe, where age limits on social media are tightening. This creates additional barriers for any platform wanting to attract teenagers.

Other companies have already captured the idea of a chronological feed. Bluesky has more than 43 million users, built around user-controlled, time-based posts. New apps like Attie let users customize feeds by describing their preferences in plain language. These efforts show that the idea of a feed without algorithms isn’t new, and competition is fierce. Myspace will need more than nostalgia to succeed in this crowded space. The question remains whether the platform can carve out a unique voice or if it will become another forgotten relic.
