    Shark Records Reveal Long-Term Resilience

    Recent research shows that shark populations have existed for at least 7,000 years. Scientists examined shark scales found in Panama’s seafloor mud to learn about history. These scales, called dermal denticles, are shed constantly and fossilize in sediments. By counting them, researchers estimated how many sharks swam above. Surprisingly, the results revealed that Pacific reefs supported many more sharks long ago than Caribbean reefs. The ancient Pacific coast had about 20 times more sharks than its Caribbean neighbor. This suggests that healthy reefs once hosted large shark populations, despite centuries of fishing. Recognizing this history helps us understand what a thriving reef can look like today.

    Fishing Isn’t the Whole Story

    While overfishing harms sharks worldwide, the data shows a different pattern in Panama. Shark numbers declined most on the Caribbean side, where fishing was lighter. Conversely, the Pacific coast, which experienced more fishing, still showed large shark populations. The study found that regions with less fishing did not necessarily have fewer sharks historically. Instead, ocean conditions play a vital role. The Gulf of Panama benefits from seasonal upwelling, which brings nutrients to support abundant prey for sharks. Meanwhile, the Caribbean has less available food, making it harder for sharks to thrive, even with little fishing. This insight challenges the assumption that fishing alone drives shark declines everywhere.

    Practical Implications for Reef Management

    Understanding past shark abundance informs current conservation efforts. Recovery goals often rely on baseline data, but this study highlights the importance of region-specific targets. Applying a single standard across Panama’s coast could be unrealistic, since historical shark numbers varied vastly. Managers can now consider these long-term records to set smarter, more achievable goals. However, the method has limitations. Recent decades may show declines hidden by averaging over centuries. Still, the findings provide a clearer picture of what a healthy reef once looked like. Incorporating these insights supports more effective protections that match each reef’s natural capacity. This approach benefits sharks, ecosystems, and the human journey toward sustainable ocean use.
