    New Rules Make Device Security a Governance Issue

    Recently, new EU laws changed how we handle connected devices. These laws, called the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), require companies to act quickly when vulnerabilities are found. For example, if a flaw is exploited, manufacturers must notify authorities within 24 hours. Full details must be shared within 72 hours. This shift makes device security less about individual products and more about how companies govern their entire systems. As a result, device security now involves management decisions, not just technical fixes. This change helps protect everyday devices like cars, medical tools, and home gadgets, making our lives safer.

    From Technology to Accountability

    The new laws also introduce clearer accountability. While the CRA targets manufacturers, other regulations like the NIS2 Directive focus on operators—those managing the connected systems daily. Often, many parties work together in deploying IoT devices, including vendors, platform providers, and operators. Yet, these roles are not always defined in contracts. Now, regulations demand that someone be named as responsible for security at every stage. This requirement helps ensure that security is not overlooked and that there is clear leadership during incidents or updates.

    Advancing Security Through Longer Lifecycle and Better Connectivity

    Another important change concerns how devices are maintained over time. Many IoT devices are used for 10 to 15 years, but older policies didn’t require continuous updates. New rules now push companies to demonstrate their ability to keep devices secure over their entire lifespan. Legislation also emphasizes integrating connectivity into security plans. This means that networks and devices should be protected as part of a full security system. Overall, these regulations aim to improve device safety, enhance technological progress, and ultimately, raise our quality of life by making smart devices more secure and reliable.
