    Fast Facts

    1. Many men confidently recognize prominent AI figures like Sam Altman, but often mistake fictional profiles for real experts, revealing overconfidence compared to women.
    2. Women are generally more uncertain about AI knowledge, asking more “not sure” responses and being underrepresented as expert voices in media coverage.
    3. Men dominate AI media mentions and expert quotes, despite women representing nearly 30% of AI talent, highlighting gender disparities in visibility and confidence.
    4. While both genders are concerned about AI, women feel more fearful and uncertain, stressing the need for greater acknowledgment of uncertainty in AI discussions.

Men Often Overestimate Their AI Knowledge

Many men believe they know more about AI than they actually do. For example, a survey showed 73% of men recognized a top AI CEO. However, just over half knew about other key figures, some of whom don’t even exist. Interestingly, men tend to be more confident when answering AI questions. They are also more likely to claim certainty, even when unsure. This overconfidence can lead to misunderstandings but also shows high interest in AI. Overall, men’s attitude toward AI is more positive and hopeful.

Media Coverage Reflects and Reinforces Gender Gaps

Media tends to highlight male AI experts more often. In fact, three out of four quoted AI specialists are men, even though women make up nearly 29% of AI talent. Men are also named in headlines about AI over 14 times more than women. This focus influences how people see who is knowledgeable about AI. Women are less visible, which may make it seem like men are the main AI thinkers. Experts say more women should be featured to balance the conversation and show that uncertainty is okay.

Attitudes Toward AI Are Gendered and Vary

Both men and women feel worried about AI, but women tend to be more fearful and concerned. Men, on the other hand, often feel curiosity and excitement. Researchers note that men are less likely to admit when they are unsure about AI topics. This confidence gap affects how each gender talks about AI’s future. It also impacts who gets to share opinions and lead discussions. Experts recommend that everyone be more comfortable saying “I don’t know” to promote realistic conversations about AI.
