StockWatch: Liquidia Rebounds After Settling Legal Wrangle With United Therapeutics

    A costly truce lifts shares

Liquidia shares rebounded about 25% over five trading days after the company settled six lawsuits with United Therapeutics. The agreement ends a seven-year fight over patents, trade secrets and competition.

The peace comes at a price. Liquidia agreed to pay $380.7 million to United Therapeutics and other parties. It will also remove pulmonary hypertension linked to interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) from the label for its inhaled drug, Yutrepia, and stop promoting it for that condition to new patients.

    PAH sales remain in focus

Yutrepia can still be sold for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Liquidia also plans to continue developing the drug for other conditions, including Raynaud’s phenomenon associated with systemic sclerosis. The FDA has granted that program Fast Track status, which can speed development and review but does not guarantee approval.

The company reported unaudited third-quarter Yutrepia sales of $222.7 million, up 31% from the second quarter. Sales have been shifting toward PAH, potentially limiting the impact of the PH-ILD label change. Still, people with PH-ILD who use Yutrepia may need to consider other treatment options, including United Therapeutics’ Tyvaso.

    Analysts see different winners

Some analysts view the settlement as a win for Liquidia because it removes uncertainty around Yutrepia’s sales and development. Others see United Therapeutics as the clear beneficiary: It keeps its position in PH-ILD treatment and may gain patients moving from Yutrepia to Tyvaso.

For patients, the immediate question is access to suitable care, not which company’s shares rise. The settlement leaves room for continued research, including Liquidia’s extended-release drug candidate L606. Yet development takes time, and promising programs are not proven treatments. The lasting measure will be whether new options improve daily life for people with serious lung disease.
