    Quick Takeaways

    • AI agents promised to eliminate corporate drudgery through autonomous digital work.
    • In practice, businesses across Asia are finding they create more work.
    • Two agents debated responsibilities instead of efficiently dividing a supposedly simple assignment.
    • Their coordination added communication overhead, friction, and another layer of management.

    The promise meets the paperwork

AI agents arrived with an appealing idea: give routine tasks to digital workers, then free people to focus on more meaningful work. Yet early workplace use suggests that automation does not always remove effort. Sometimes it shifts effort into new forms.

Consider a simple assignment involving two agents. Instead of dividing the work, they debated who should check the details and who should take responsibility. Their exchange echoed familiar office bureaucracy. As a result, the person who expected to save time had to manage the agents’ discussion.

This points to a practical challenge. Agents need clear instructions, defined roles and a way to resolve conflicts. Without those limits, they can add communication overhead rather than reduce it. In other words, automation may create work before it removes work.

From digital workers to digital teamwork

Still, these early frictions do not make AI agents useless. They show that businesses need to treat them as tools that require supervision, not as independent employees. People must set goals, check important results and decide who owns the final outcome.

That approach may shape how widely companies adopt agents. Tasks with clear steps and easy-to-check results offer a more practical starting point. More complex work may demand closer oversight. Over time, teams can learn which tasks agents handle well and where human judgment matters most.

The broader promise, then, is not a workplace without human effort. It is a workplace where people spend less time on routine tasks and more time on decisions, relationships and creative problem-solving. AI can contribute to that human journey. But companies must first learn how to coordinate digital workers—and ensure their tools make work clearer, not more cumbersome.
