    Top Highlights

    1. Anifa Mvuemba founded Hanifa in 2011 to make bold, luxurious fashion inclusive for women of every size.
    2. Her boundary-pushing 3D digital runway show in 2020 propelled Hanifa into the fashion spotlight.
    3. Worn by stars including Beyoncé and Zendaya, Hanifa reached 100,000 orders and dressed Savannah James for the 2025 Met Gala.
    4. Despite production challenges forcing a pause in 2026, Mvuemba’s creative impact and entrepreneurial vision earned her ESSENCE recognition.

Luxury With Room for Every Body

Anifa Mvuemba founded Hanifa in 2011 to challenge narrow ideas of luxury and make fashion more inclusive. The label’s bold colors, sculptural shapes and distinctive knits stand out. So does its sizing: Women across a wider range of body types can shop for luxury designs.

That access matters in everyday life. Clothing can shape how people feel seen and represented. Mvuemba built the business slowly; until 2018, she sewed each piece by hand. A celebrity appearance in 2017 helped bring wider attention, followed by a 2019 spot in Teen Vogue’s Generation Next program.

    Fashion Meets Digital Possibility

In 2020, Mvuemba presented the 2021 Pink Label Congo collection on Instagram Live, using 3D models instead of a conventional runway. The show went viral and demonstrated how digital tools could help designers reach audiences without a physical venue. It also expanded ideas about how fashion can be presented, though digital innovation cannot solve every challenge of making and delivering clothing.

Recognition followed. Mvuemba received support from the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2021 and staged her first runway show at Washington’s National Portrait Gallery. In 2023, she added bridalwear. Her designs have since reached prominent public figures, and a burgundy look she made for Savannah James appeared at the 2025 Met Gala. That year, Hanifa also recorded 100,000 orders.

    Growth, With Real-World Limits

Success has not removed the strains of running a small business. In March 2026, after 15 years in business, Mvuemba paused production indefinitely, citing manufacturing delays and missed delivery windows. Customers raised concerns online. Their frustration points to a difficult balance: A brand must grow while still meeting expectations for service and timely orders.

Hanifa’s story is both an account of creative progress and a reminder that ambition needs reliable operations. Mvuemba has widened access to luxury fashion and tested new ways to show it. Her next challenge is sustaining that promise for customers.
