    Quick Takeaways

    1. Social apps need a rethink: Ohanian sees a better version of group chat—not another traditional social network—as the future of user-generated content.
    2. The internet feels less human: Bots and AI-generated content are flooding online spaces, making real-world communities and “provable humanity” more valuable.
    3. AI is both opportunity and threat: Reddit’s human conversations are valuable training data, but AI-powered search may also cut traffic and weaken platforms.
    4. He’s cautiously optimistic: Ohanian warns AI can cause harm, yet believes it could deliver major breakthroughs—especially in medicine.

Social Apps Need a New Purpose

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian says building another social media app “is not cool anymore.” Instead, he sees group chats as a possible next home for user-generated content. They feel familiar and personal. Yet they may also help people find community online without relying on another public feed.

AI Raises Trust and Traffic Concerns

Ohanian worries that bots and AI-generated posts have made the internet harder to trust. He says online content now attracts manipulation because it holds commercial value. At the same time, AI has made Reddit’s human conversations valuable to companies training large language models.

That value brings risks. Reddit shares fell after the company warned that Google’s AI-powered search was reducing traffic from search results. Reddit also plans to require sign-ins to limit outside data scraping and support user engagement. Such steps could protect content, but they may also add friction for people who want quick access.

    Adoption Will Depend on Trust

Ohanian wants the internet to verify that users are human without invading their privacy. That balance could shape whether people embrace new online spaces. If a group chat offers useful tools, clear rules and real connection, users may join. If it feels closed or intrusive, they may stay away.

Despite his concerns, Ohanian sees promise in AI, especially for medical breakthroughs. He urges caution, but believes the technology could improve people’s lives. The challenge is to build online tools that serve people first.
