    Top Highlights

    1. The gaming industry is facing a backlog problem, with players struggling to finish or even start long titles, as only about 10% of buyers reportedly complete their games.

    2. Game lengths have significantly increased over the last decade, exemplified by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which runs 60-100+ hours, leading to diminishing returns on player engagement despite higher development costs.

    3. Developers like Obsidian, with their new RPG Avowed, are prioritizing shorter gameplay experiences (15-40 hours) that respect players’ time and can still deliver immersive, high-quality content.

    4. The trend is shifting towards quality over quantity, as shorter games, like Spider-Man 2, can achieve critical and commercial success without requiring excessive playtime.

The gaming industry faces a paradox. As the number of releases grows, so does the average time it takes to complete them. Players increasingly encounter lengthy titles that overshadow their gaming experiences. This trend can lead to a backlog—a collection of games many players own but never finish. Over time, this phenomenon has begun to frustrate gamers.

Obsidian Entertainment’s new RPG, Avowed, challenges this trend. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes a commitment to respecting players’ time. She acknowledges that modern gamers often juggle numerous responsibilities. Thus, Avowed aims to provide a fulfilling experience without excessive time demands.

Estimates suggest that players need only about 15 hours for a quick playthrough of the game. Completing extra content brings the total to about 40 hours. This approach contrasts sharply with titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, where completion times can soar to over 100 hours. While longer games may promise more content, they often leave players disengaged. Rhys Elliott from Midia Research highlights a troubling pattern: longer games have lower completion rates. As the development costs rise, players feel the pressure of diminishing returns.

Quality supersedes quantity. Avowed exemplifies this philosophy. Patel insists that gamers are not merely seeking to kill time. Instead, they crave immersive, valuable experiences. Even shorter games can captivate players with engaging narratives and well-crafted mechanics. A recent example is Spider-Man 2, a game that players can fully complete in under 30 hours yet still achieved critical acclaim and record-breaking sales.

In this rapidly evolving industry, flexibility is key. By allowing players to tailor their experiences, developers can cater to various preferences. Avowed thus presents exit ramps for those who wish to bypass optional content, enhancing accessibility while maintaining depth.

Change is on the horizon, as companies recognize the need to innovate and adapt. With established franchises now exploring shorter formats, the future looks bright for both gamers and developers alike. Engaging, concise storytelling will likely become the industry standard, ultimately enriching the gaming landscape for all.
