The State of BitcoinFi in Q2 2025: Research Insights
Maestro, a prominent provider of Bitcoin Finance (BitcoinFi) infrastructure, recently released the “State of BitcoinFi” report. This report offers an insightful analysis of the current landscape of Bitcoin applications and infrastructure. More importantly, it highlights Bitcoin’s evolution from a mere store of value to a dynamic player in traditional finance’s on-chain transition.
With increasing confidence, Maestro projects that Bitcoin transactions will continue to rise. Enterprises increasingly stack Bitcoin in their treasuries. Moreover, more idle coins are now being activated for yield generation and other uses. “We’re witnessing the convergence of TradFi and DeFi into a Bitcoin-denominated capital market,” said Marvin Bertin, Co-Founder and CEO of Maestro. For the first time, essential components for on-chain financial applications on Bitcoin are in place. This development spans exchanges, lending, and stablecoins, suggesting a bright future for Bitcoin as it shifts from a static reserve asset to a robust financial network.
Staking and Lending Growth
Staking leads BitcoinFi applications, with total value locked (TVL) exceeding 68,500 Bitcoin, equating to around $7.39 billion. Re-staking also gains traction, as $3.32 billion dies, allowing the niche to secure over $10 billion in yield-bearing protocols. Babylon holds the top spot with $4.79 billion, while platforms like Solv, Lombard, and CoreDAO push the limits of liquid staking and re-staking strategies.
In addition, CoreDAO introduced dual staking. This innovative approach has drawn over $615 million in BTC, with incentives such as block rewards and transaction fee shares. However, challenges persist. Many staking returns do not align with treasury rates, and differing chains manage yield and liquidity.
Emerging Solutions with Programmability Layers
Bitcoin’s Layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions represent another exciting development. They currently hold $5.52 billion (52,000 coins) in TVL. This reflects strong demand from developers and users. Although Bitcoin’s base layer lacks programmability, layers like Stacks are making significant strides, more than doubling their TVL this quarter.
The architecture is diversifying as sidechains, rollups, and execution layers emerge. Bitcoin’s path from a passive store of value is gradually expanding to include rich programming environments.
Metaprotocols and Transaction Growth
The popularity of metaprotocols, including Runes, Ordinals, and BRC-20 tokens, has surged. These accounted for over 40% of Bitcoin transactions in the first half of 2025, with BRC-20 volume reaching $128 million. Ordinals, rebounding from a previous downturn, saw over 80 million inscriptions, generating significant fees.
Stablecoins: A Growing Asset Class
Stablecoins are gaining prominence, boasting $860 million in TVL and marking a 42% quarter-over-quarter increase. Collateralized Debt Position (CDP)-based stablecoins like Avalon’s USDa have attracted early users. High-yield options, such as Hermetica’s 25% APY offering, cater to a rising demand for capital-generating assets. However, fragmented liquidity remains a barrier, causing challenges in concluding transactions across different platforms.

Venture funding for BitcoinFi has rebounded, reaching $175 million across 32 rounds in the first half of 2025. Investors are focusing on applications, DeFi solutions, and custody, indicating a shift toward usability. Notable investment firms validate this emerging frontier, highlighting the intersection of infrastructural depth and application layer traction.
