South Station’s New Wing Enhances Capacity
Boston’s South Station bus terminal marked a significant milestone yesterday. After five years of diligent planning and construction, the expansion debuted 16 additional bus docks. Now, the terminal boasts a total of 42 docks, easing congestion for travelers. General Manager Mark Richardson emphasized the importance of options. With seamless connections among various transportation modes, passengers can enjoy a more integrated travel experience.
FlixBus and Greyhound have already secured three new docks, totaling ten for their combined services. Additionally, Our Bus plans to operate from the terminal, which will expand the total bus lines to ten. This boost comes as intercity bus ridership is on the rise. Around 50 million passengers utilized these services in 2023 alone. Experts estimate a 4% increase in ridership this year. This growth signals a brighter future for Boston’s interconnected transportation options.
Future Improvements and Amenities
The expansion promises more than just increased capacity. Enhanced amenities will grace the terminal next year. Three new retail locations will join existing offerings. In addition, Richardson hopes to attract more food and beverage outlets to enrich the customer experience.
Moreover, accessibility will significantly improve. New stairs, escalators, and elevators will connect the train station directly to the bus terminal, simplifying transit for rail passengers. As Boston’s Financial, Seaport, and Waterfront districts expand, more customers will flock to the terminal. This growth encourages bus carriers to invest in new gates, setting the stage for a community that thrives on enhanced connectivity and convenience.
