    Fast Facts

    1. Transition to Civilian Aviation: Jeremy Johnson, a research pilot at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, is completing a four-month SkillBridge fellowship, facilitating his transition from the U.S. Air Force to civilian aviation roles focused on scientific research.

    2. Impactful Research Missions: Johnson’s flight experience contributes to key NASA projects, including testing laser communication systems and exploring 5G infrastructure for future electric air taxis, advancing technology and innovation in aviation.

    3. Passion for Aviation: Johnson’s love for aviation began in his youth, and despite challenges such as overcoming self-doubt from a rough first solo flight, his determination helped him pursue a successful flying career.

    4. Emphasis on Perseverance: He encourages aspiring pilots to persist through obstacles, advocating for resilience and confidence in pursuing their dreams, stating, "Make people close doors on you; don’t close them on yourself."

Air Force Pilot, SkillBridge Fellow Helps NASA Research Soar

CLEVELAND – Jeremy Johnson tightens his black steel-toed boots and zips up his dark blue flight suit. He just wrapped up a pre-flight briefing, eager to take to the skies. Today’s mission? Support vital NASA research.

As Johnson maneuvers a small white-and-blue propeller aircraft from the hangar to the runway, he hears the command clear through his headset: “NASA 606, cleared for takeoff.” This marks a typical day for Johnson, a research pilot at NASA’s Glenn Research Center.

In his role, Johnson flies specially equipped aircraft. He collaborates with researchers to gather essential data while ensuring safety. Johnson’s aviation background stems from his time in the U.S. Air Force, where he managed worldwide missions in C-17 cargo planes and trained future aviators.

Currently, Johnson participates in the Department of Defense SkillBridge fellowship. This program allows transitioning service members to gain civilian work experience during their last 180 days of military service. Johnson appreciates SkillBridge as a valuable opportunity, stating, “In the Air Force, flying the mission was the mission. At NASA Glenn, the science—the research—is the mission.”

Johnson has been instrumental in two significant NASA projects. The first focuses on testing laser systems for communication and navigation. The second, part of NASA’s Air Mobility Pathfinders initiative, explores 5G technology for future electric air taxis. His contributions bolster advancements in technology that promise widespread benefits.

“It’s really exciting to see research hardware come fresh from the lab,” Johnson shared. He views each flight as a crucial part of larger scientific endeavors. “Every flight you do is one little piece of something that may change the frontier of discovery.”

A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Johnson faced challenges on his path to becoming a pilot. He recalls a turbulent first solo flight, which left him questioning his abilities. Nevertheless, he pressed on. “Just forge forward with it. Make people close doors on you, don’t close them on yourself,” he advised aspiring pilots.

Johnson’s journey reflects the interplay between passion and perseverance. As he takes flight, he not only furthers his career but also plays a vital role in technological innovation for the future. His story embodies the spirit of exploration and advancement, inspiring others to reach for the skies.
