eToro to Launch Tokenized Stock Trading on Ethereum
eToro announced a major development in financial technology. During a global webinar on Tuesday, the company outlined its new initiative to tokenize stock trading. This approach includes offering 100 popular U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as digital assets on the Ethereum blockchain.
Now, users can trade these stocks around the clock, five days a week. This flexibility allows traders to respond instantly to market changes. eToro’s co-founder and CEO Yoni Assia highlighted the firm’s ongoing commitment to tokenization. He stated that blockchain technology will drive “the greatest ever transfer of wealth” as traditional assets transition onto the blockchain.
Furthermore, Assia noted new regulations, like MiCA in Europe and the GENIUS Act in the U.S., create a secure framework for these digital assets. This legal backing reassures investors and opens doors to innovative financial products.
With these tokenized stocks launched as ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, eToro aims to eventually tokenize all assets on its platform. Assia emphasized this goal will integrate these assets into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, potentially reshaping how people trade.
The move aligns with industry trends. Competitor Robinhood recently introduced tokenized stocks for European clients, indicating a growing acceptance of this model. In fact, Ethereum remains a popular choice for such initiatives, boasting 55% of the total value of tokenized real-world assets, currently estimated at $21.4 billion.
The surge in interest for real-world asset tokenization signals a bright future for digital finance. Major banks like JPMorgan and trading platforms are keen to explore these opportunities. As more companies embrace blockchain, the benefits of trading will likely expand, offering enhanced solutions for investors worldwide.
