    Top Highlights

    1. Online Safety Act Implementation: The UK’s Online Safety Act, effective July 25th, mandates that websites protect children from harmful content, leading many to introduce age verification barriers.

    2. User Circumvention via VPNs: Many UK users, particularly minors, are using VPNs to bypass the new age restrictions, with five of the top ten most-downloaded apps being VPNs shortly after the law’s enactment.

    3. Risks of Free VPNs: Utilizing free VPNs poses significant risks, including potential data abuse and malware, as many are unvetted and may exploit users’ information for profit.

    4. Choosing Safe VPNs: When selecting a VPN, prioritize those with clear pricing, independent audits, a physical address, and comprehensive privacy policies; trustworthy options include Proton VPN, hide.me, TunnelBear, and Windscribe.

VPN Usage Soars in the UK Amid New Age Restrictions, But Free Services Pose Risks

The United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act went into effect on July 25, imposing age restrictions on online content to protect children. This significant change has led to an unexpected surge in Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage among UK residents. Now, users bypass age limitations by masking their locations.

In just days, five of the ten most-downloaded apps in the UK are VPNs. Popular options include Proton VPN and NordVPN. However, while Proton offers a free tier, NordVPN only provides a seven-day trial before requiring payment. Unfortunately, many of the remaining VPNs are unvetted and lack credible security measures.

Using a VPN can seem safe. Yet, it often involves trusting the service with sensitive information. Free VPNs, particularly those without a paid tier, raise concerns. The saying "if the product is free, you are the product" rings true here. Many free services monetize user data, such as Hola VPN, which sells users’ IP addresses, or Hotspot Shield, which faced an FTC complaint for mishandling personal information.

Moreover, malware poses serious risks. A 2016 study found that 38% of Android VPN apps contained malicious software. Recent reports indicate that threats have increased, with free VPNs becoming vectors for malware attacks.

Choosing the right VPN matters. A reliable service should have a clear pricing structure, recent independent audits, a transparent privacy policy, and a physical address listed on their website. Notable trustworthy options include Proton VPN, hide.me, TunnelBear, and Windscribe.

As more users turn to VPNs to navigate age restrictions, prioritizing security is crucial. Opting for reputable providers helps safeguard personal information while allowing access to desired content.
