    Summary Points

    1. Osaka’s Digital Revolution: Japan’s third-largest city, Osaka, is launching the Digital Entertainment City Namba, an innovative project combining AI-driven avatars and XR technologies, aiming to reshape urban experiences in tourism and public services.

    2. AI-Powered Interaction: Mawari’s 3D AI avatars will serve as multilingual guides and interactive hosts at key locations, enhancing visitor engagement and providing real-time support through voice and gesture interaction.

    3. Decentralized Infrastructure: The initiative leverages DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) to distribute computing power across the city, significantly reducing costs and improving the performance of AI and XR applications for seamless user experiences.

    4. Addressing Labor Shortages: The project aims to tackle Japan’s projected labor shortage by utilizing AI avatars in customer-facing roles, potentially transforming workforce dynamics while providing remote work opportunities for individuals.

Mawari and Nankai Electric Railway Bet on AI-Driven Smart Cities in Osaka

Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city, is on the brink of a technological transformation. In an exciting partnership, Mawari, Nankai Electric Railway, Meta Osaka, and e-Stadium are launching the Digital Entertainment City Namba. This initiative will create AI-driven urban environments, integrating extended reality (XR) with everyday experiences.

At the center of this project are Mawari’s AI avatars. These 3D avatars will serve as multilingual guides and customer service agents. Unlike traditional chatbots, these avatars can engage in real-time conversations. With voice commands or gestures, tourists can easily ask for directions, find dining options, or learn how to navigate public transport.

Nankai Electric Railway plans to implement these AI avatars at train stations and shopping centers. This widespread deployment aims to enhance the commuting experience for travelers. Simultaneously, Meta Osaka will support the creation of a robust data-sharing network for local businesses.

The initiative also envisions a seamless blend between the physical and digital worlds. Mawari’s XR technology will allow users to see AI avatars overlaid onto Osaka’s landmarks using AR glasses. Imagine walking through Namba Parks or the Tsutenkaku Tower and encountering animated characters offering insights, challenges, or shopping recommendations.

Luis Oscar Ramirez, CEO of Mawari, expressed optimism about the project. “At Mawari, our mission is to make AI-driven immersive experiences accessible to everyone,” he said. He believes this collaboration can transform urban spaces and create new job opportunities, integrating decentralized infrastructure into daily life.

A crucial aspect of this effort is the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN). This model allows computing power to be distributed throughout the city, reducing reliance on centralized data centers. By placing computing nodes near transit hubs and retail areas, the initiative aims to cut bandwidth costs significantly. This setup will enhance the performance of real-time AI avatars.

Furthermore, the project addresses Japan’s pressing labor shortages. With an estimated 11 million worker shortfall projected by 2040, particularly in tourism and customer service, AI avatars may help fill the gap. These virtual assistants can provide warm, human-like interactions, ensuring that businesses maintain high service standards.

The Digital Entertainment City Namba poses intriguing possibilities. If successful, it may offer a blueprint for other cities to incorporate AI into public services and tourism. Conversely, if it falters, it may highlight the challenges of implementing high-tech urban solutions.

For now, Mawari, Nankai, and Meta Osaka remain hopeful. They believe that AI, XR, and decentralized computing could redefine urban life in Osaka. The world will be watching to see if this innovative endeavor transforms the city into a model of modern living or becomes just another tech experiment.
