Meta unveiled its latest virtual reality prototypes this week, capturing attention with their impressive specifications and bold designs. The Tiramisu project promises a revolutionary experience, offering hyperrealistic VR. Comparatively, it boasts three times the contrast and 14 times the maximum brightness of the Meta Quest 3. In numerical terms, users can expect brightness levels up to 1,400 nits and an angular resolution of 90 pixels per degree.
Notably, one goal of Meta’s Reality Labs Research team is to create a virtual experience indistinguishable from reality—a “visual Turing test.” Xuan Wang, an optical research scientist with the team, emphasized their mission was to deliver the highest image quality possible. However, achieving this level of quality comes with trade-offs. The Tiramisu headset has a limited field of view of only 33 degrees by 33 degrees, presenting a stark contrast to the more expansive field of view found in the Meta Quest 3.
In addition to Tiramisu, Meta introduced the Boba 3 headsets. These mixed and virtual reality devices feature an ultrawide field of view, which could greatly enhance user experiences. Meta plans to showcase all three prototypes at the SIGGRAPH 2025 conference in Vancouver next week.
