    Summary Points

    1. Shreyaa Raghavan, an MIT PhD candidate, transitioned from a love for puzzles to applying computer science in solving climate challenges, particularly in renewable energy systems and sustainable transportation.

    2. Her research in Cathy Wu’s lab focuses on optimizing transportation networks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, addressing the critical link between transportation and climate change.

    3. Raghavan’s efforts are supported by both an Accenture Fellowship and a U.S. Department of Transportation fellowship, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and policy in tackling climate issues.

    4. Actively involved in the MIT Energy and Climate Club, she is launching a mentorship program to guide undergraduates in applying their skills towards climate solutions, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing climate change.

    Harnessing Puzzles for Positive Change

Shreyaa Raghavan has always loved puzzles. This passion for problem-solving led her to computer science in high school. Through an entrepreneurship program, she developed apps and reached the semifinals of a global competition. Her early achievements seemed to pave the way for a career in technology. Yet, she felt something was missing.

Raghavan, now a PhD candidate at MIT, shifted her focus while participating in a research program at the Photovoltaic Research Laboratory. Here, she learned how machine learning could optimize materials for solar panels. This realization connected her hobby to a pressing issue: climate change. Raghavan found that diverse teams could work toward sustainable energy solutions.

With a new vision, she joined Cathy Wu’s lab in 2023. The lab aims to build sustainable transportation systems, which are critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Raghavan questions how advanced technology can minimize stop-and-go traffic and its associated emissions. “Transportation accounts for roughly 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions,” she said.

    Data-Driven Approaches to Sustainability

Wu emphasizes the significance of Raghavan’s work. She noted that “transportation is a critical element of both the economy and climate change.” Raghavan’s research on smart congestion management hinges on data to support sustainable practices. Her efforts have earned her the Accenture Fellowship, which backs the MIT-Accenture Convergence Initiative.

As an Accenture Fellow, Raghavan explores cost-effective strategies to minimize traffic emissions. Technologies like networked autonomous vehicles and adaptive digital speed limits are under consideration. Raghavan appreciates the fellowship’s role in fostering industry engagement in sustainable practices.

Strong collaboration emerges as a vital theme in Raghavan’s work. “It’s important for industry to be involved in smarter transportation systems,” she noted. Support from the U.S. Department of Transportation further highlights the growing interest in this field.

    Collaborative Solutions for Climate Challenges

Raghavan believes that tackling climate change requires teamwork across various disciplines. “No one industry can solve this,” she stated. Through the MIT Energy and Climate Club, she connects with like-minded individuals dedicated to similar goals.

Currently, Raghavan leads a community and education initiative within the club. She plans to launch a mentorship program pairing undergraduates with graduate students. This effort aims to guide students on how to leverage their unique skills for climate action.

Raghavan herself enjoys working in transit. She finds inspiration on trains and buses, often connecting her travels to her research. Anticipating a train journey to New York, she eagerly anticipates finding solutions during the ride.

Through her unique journey, Shreyaa Raghavan exemplifies how passion and education can converge to tackle real-world challenges. She inspires others to embrace interdisciplinary approaches in the quest for sustainability.
