Since its inception, The Engine has welcomed approximately 100 startups, which together employ nearly 1,000 people. The Engine originated from MIT in 2016, designed to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and commercial viability. Initially, it operated out of a smaller location, but as demand grew, so did the need for a larger space. Thus, leaders at MIT identified the old Polaroid building for renovation, transforming it into a comprehensive facility tailored for tough tech startups.
Renovations began in late 2019, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite challenges, construction continued, transforming the building into an ideal environment for innovation. Today, floors feature everything from biology and chemistry labs to 3D printing spaces. Notably, even coffee is on tap, underscoring the Accelerator’s focus on comfort and collaboration.
The collaborative atmosphere encourages interaction among founders. The first floor holds cutting-edge machinery, while the second floor contains a fabrication space where startups can prototype products quickly. Moreover, only 20% of the startups in The Engine Accelerator are part of its investment branch, Engine Ventures. This collaboration creates collective growth opportunities.
