NASA eClips STEM Ambassadors Shine at CNU’s 2025 STEM Community Day

More than 2,000 visitors from Newport News and the broader Hampton Roads area attended Christopher Newport University’s annual STEM Community Day on May 31, 2025. The event, aimed at fostering interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, captivated participants of all ages. Notably, the NASA eClips team, part of the National Institute of Aerospace’s Center for Integrative STEM Education, played a central role, connecting attendees to the wonders of space.

At the core of the exhibit, the STEM Student Ambassadors, a group of high school students from the Tidewater region, showcased their passion and knowledge. These ambassadors received rigorous training with NASA educators during the summer of 2024. Their mission focused on promoting STEM awareness and inspiring young minds.

Throughout the event, the Ambassadors led two innovative activities that seamlessly blended STEM and the arts. First, participants experienced the "Chalk Corona" activity. Using black paper and bright chalk, they recreated the Sun’s corona—the fiery halo visible during total solar eclipses. As attendees shaded and smudged, the Ambassadors explained the significance of the corona in solar research. They also provided certified solar viewers for safe Sun-watching.

Next, visitors engaged with "Pastel Auroras." This activity illustrated how solar events, like coronal mass ejections, create stunning auroras on Earth. Guided by the Ambassadors, participants layered pastels, bringing the mesmerizing lights of recent mid-Atlantic aurora sightings to life. This hands-on approach made complex heliophysics accessible and enjoyable.

The enthusiasm radiating from the Ambassadors helped demystify the universe, inviting curiosity about STEM careers and opportunities. Their presence truly illuminated the celebration, emphasizing the importance of engaging young learners.

NASA eClips aims to enhance STEM literacy through videos and interactive materials, connecting educators and communities with the latest in scientific knowledge. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to inspiring the next generation, driving technological advancements, and improving quality of life through educational outreach.
