NASA astronaut Chris Williams and his two crewmates arrived safely at the International Space Station on Thursday. This arrival expands the station’s crew to 10 for the next two weeks, highlighting international collaboration in space.
The trio launched aboard the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:27 a.m. EST. After a quick three-hour journey, the spacecraft docked at 7:34 a.m. to the station’s Rassvet module. Following the hatch opening at approximately 10:10 a.m., the new arrivals will join the Expedition 73 crew.
This crew includes NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Zena Cardman, and Jonny Kim. They are joined by JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov, Alexey Zubritsky, and Oleg Platonov. NASA will provide live coverage of the hatch opening at 9:50 a.m. on various platforms, including NASA+, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.
During his stay, Williams will conduct important scientific research. He aims to advance human space exploration and develop technologies that benefit life on Earth. Notably, he will help install a new modular workout system designed for long-duration missions. Furthermore, he will support experiments to improve cryogenic fuel efficiency and grow semiconductor crystals in space.
These efforts contribute to developing safer and more efficient space missions. Williams will also assist NASA in designing new re-entry safety protocols, enhancing the safety of future missions.
On December 8, Expedition 74 will begin after the departure of Kim, Ryzhikov, and Zubritzky, who are concluding an eight-month mission. A live change of command ceremony is set for December 7 at 10:25 a.m., showcasing the seamless transition of leadership aboard the station.
