Nintendo has confirmed that the original Nintendo Switch is set for a price increase in the United States, effective August 3. The company cites “market conditions” as the reason for this change. This adjustment will impact three models: the regular Switch, the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED. Select accessories, including Amiibo and the Alarmo alarm clock, will also see price hikes.
Currently, the original Switch retails for $300, the Switch Lite for $200, and the Switch OLED for $350. Reports from Target hinted at the new prices, briefly listing the Switch at $340, the Switch Lite at $230, and the Switch OLED at $400. If these adjustments hold true, they would represent significant increases across the board.
Interestingly, Nintendo noted that the upcoming Switch 2 and existing games or Nintendo Switch Online memberships remain unaffected by this pricing change. This move comes on the heels of similar price increases in Canada, where the console has become $20 CAD more expensive.
While price adjustments can prompt concern, it’s worth noting that the new pricing in the U.S. may not be as severe as recent hikes announced by Microsoft for the Xbox Series S and Series X. Those consoles now start at $380 and $550, respectively, marking increases of $80 and $100.
Nintendo has left the door open for more widespread adjustments in the future, but for now, fans can expect to pay more for their favorite consoles. Despite the increases, enthusiasts will likely continue to invest in the Nintendo ecosystem, as its unique titles and beloved franchises keep players engaged.
