NASA Announces New Astronaut Class and Artemis II Mission Details
NASA has opened media accreditation for a series of events this September at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The agency will reveal its new astronaut candidates for 2025 during a ceremony on September 22 at 12:30 p.m. EDT. Afterward, the candidates will be available for interviews.
The selection event will stream live on platforms like NASA+, Netflix, and YouTube. This year, NASA received over 8,000 applications, showcasing the growing interest in space exploration.
Following the astronaut selection, NASA will host media briefings on September 23 and 24. During these sessions, the agency will provide insights into Artemis II, a crucial mission set to launch no later than April 2026. This mission will use the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft, carrying astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew will embark on a 10-day journey around the Moon.
Artemis II represents the first crewed flight in NASA’s Artemis program. This mission aims to test vital systems and hardware critical for future endeavors, including crewed missions to the Moon and eventually Mars. As such, it marks a significant leap forward in human space exploration and technology development.
On September 24, NASA will conduct a dedicated media day focusing on Artemis II. This event will showcase mission support facilities and provide interview opportunities with key personnel, including flight directors and engineers. Media representatives interested in attending must confirm their participation by specific deadlines, ensuring inclusivity for all interested journalists.
These upcoming events underline NASA’s commitment to engaging the public and advancing space technology. They also reflect how collaborative efforts in space exploration can inspire the next generation while improving technology relevant to life on Earth.
