Aubrie Henspeter: Leading Commercial Lunar Missions
NASA’s commitment to lunar exploration thrives through partnerships with American industry. As the agency bolsters its efforts, a dedicated team focuses on strategy, compliance, and innovation. Leading this initiative is Aubrie Henspeter, a vital figure behind NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS).
Henspeter, with 20 years at NASA, steers the procurement team at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Her role combines problem-solving, mentoring, and strategizing. She aims to help commercial partners deliver NASA payloads to the Moon faster and at a lower cost.
“It’s been a great experience to see the full lifecycle of a project,” Henspeter said. By adapting procurement terms, her team incorporates lessons learned from past missions. They support seven ongoing commercial missions and prepare for future lunar deliveries.
NASA launched the CLPS initiative in 2018 to create flexible partnerships with commercial vendors. Currently, 13 companies can compete for contracts to deliver science and technology payloads to the Moon. This approach aligns with Artemis goals, enabling discoveries and preparing for long-term human presence on the lunar surface.
Recently, Henspeter earned the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for her contributions to the CLPS from 2018 to 2023. She credits her team’s collaboration for this achievement. “When we all work together, we can achieve our mission,” she stated.
Henspeter emphasizes the importance of keeping contracts current. “Open communication and up-to-date documentation are essential,” she noted. Her career underscores the value of preparation and adaptability. By understanding regulations and conducting thorough market research, she effectively meets customer needs.
Her philosophy extends beyond her immediate team. Henspeter collaborates with brilliant minds at NASA, presenting alternatives and data-driven solutions. “Every contribution matters,” she said, reinforcing the notion that every detail contributes to mission success.
As Henspeter prepares for the Artemis Generation, she aims to instill the significance of teamwork. Her journey highlights how strong partnerships and a dedicated approach to procurement can reshape technology development in space exploration. With leaders like Henspeter at the helm, NASA’s lunar mission has a bright future ahead.
