Ali Neumann, a disaster risk reduction advisor with the Swiss Development Cooperation, warns that climate change will increasingly threaten societies that rely on glaciers.
“The right skills and observation can significantly reduce the impact of such disasters,” Neumann stated at a UN-backed glacier conference in Tajikistan. In fact, the average number of deaths per disaster in Asia and the Pacific is significantly higher than the global average.
While Swiss geologists utilize advanced methods like sensors and satellite imagery to monitor their glaciers, many areas in Asia face resource challenges that hinder similar efforts. Geologist Sudan Bikash Maharjan of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) explained, “Monitoring is not absent, but it is not enough.”
The melting of Himalayan glaciers threatens nearly two billion people. As climate change accelerates, numerous glacial lakes have formed, posing serious risks when they overflow. Declan Magee from the Asian Development Bank highlighted the need to rethink infrastructure placement to reduce vulnerability.
