    Summary Points

    1. Phreeli MVNO: A new mobile carrier, Phreeli, allows sign-up using only a ZIP code, aiming for anonymity by not collecting names, addresses, or payment details, and operates on T-Mobile’s network.

    2. Payment Privacy: It utilizes a unique payment system called Double-Blind Armadillo with zero-knowledge cryptography, enabling payments through traditional cards or privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Zcash and Monero.

    3. Founder’s Mission: Founded by Nicholas Merrill, a privacy advocate known for challenging FBI surveillance, Phreeli seeks to sever the connection between phone usage and personal identity, enhancing user privacy.

    4. Controlled Anonymity: While the service limits personal data exposure, it also implements measures to prevent misuse, such as controlling call and text volume, distinguishing it from traditional ‘burner phone’ concepts.

New Privacy-Focused MVNO Phreeli Doesn’t Even Record Your Name

A new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Phreeli, is breaking new ground in privacy. This innovative service allows users to sign up using only their ZIP code. Founder Nicholas Merrill assures users that this method complies with regulations in all 50 states.

Phreeli runs on T-Mobile’s extensive network. However, what sets it apart is its commitment to user anonymity. The company does not collect names, addresses, or payment information linked to user accounts. Merrill aims to sever the connection between phone activity and personal identity, a significant concern in an era of increased surveillance.

Phreeli utilizes a payment system called Double-Blind Armadillo. This technology employs zero-knowledge cryptography, which verifies payments without connecting them to an individual’s phone number. Users also have the option to pay with privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Zcash or Monero. All services are prepaid, meaning no ongoing billing exists.

If users want extra features, like account recovery, they can provide an email or shipping address. However, Phreeli promises to delete this information after use. Users can also opt for an eSIM, which they can download via a secure Tor-hosted site.

Merrill’s vision stems from his long battle against an FBI surveillance order dating back to 2004. He founded the Calyx Institute, which has created privacy tools such as a no-logs VPN. While he acknowledges that some individuals may misuse the service, he emphasizes that Phreeli will limit excessive calls and texts to control abuse.

This new MVNO represents a meaningful step towards modernizing mobile services in a tech-driven world. By focusing on user privacy, Phreeli offers an alternative for those concerned about data tracking and surveillance. In smart cities and urban areas, such innovations can foster a more secure digital environment, empowering users without compromising their identities.
