    Essential Insights

    1. Gaming Performance Gap: The Pixel 10 Pro XL’s gaming performance lags behind its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, mainly due to the less capable DXT-48-1536 GPU in the new Tensor G5 chip.

    2. Driver Update Benefits: The Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 update improves average frame rates by 5-17.9% in select titles, enhancing overall gaming smoothness but still falling short of achieving locked 60fps across games.

    3. Emulator Performance Issues: While there are performance gains in OpenGL, especially notable in F-Zero GX (27% boost), Vulkan performance remains disappointing, failing to provide playable frame rates compared to last year’s models.

    4. Limited Impact on Competition: Despite some improvements from the driver update, the Pixel 10 Pro XL still doesn’t compete with leading gaming chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, making it a challenging choice for gaming enthusiasts.

Testing the Pixel 10’s New Driver Upgrade: Winners and Losers

Google’s recent driver update for the Pixel 10 series brings notable improvements, particularly for gamers. The Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 upgrade enhances performance across various titles, but it’s not without its drawbacks.

First, the good news: average frame rates in games like Asphalt Legends and Genshin Impact have risen by 8.6% and 17.9%, respectively. These increases lead to smoother gameplay experiences for users. Transitioning to Android 16 QPR3 seems to reduce judder and slowdowns, improving overall responsiveness.

However, not every title benefited equally. Call of Duty Mobile’s Battle Royale showed only a modest gain of 2-3%. This indicates that some games may already maximize the hardware’s potential, limiting further performance boosts.

Switching gears to emulation, the results are mixed but still promising. OpenGL performed better for most tests. Games like Mario Kart Wii and Need for Speed: Most Wanted saw improvements, with gains of 6.6% and 10.8%, respectively. Remarkably, F-Zero GX experienced a significant 27% boost, a testament to the driver update’s potential.

On the downside, Vulkan performance remains subpar. Despite some improvements, games running with this graphics API still struggle. The Pixel 10 series continues to lag behind last year’s models in this area, which may put off emulator enthusiasts.

Overall, while the Pixel 10’s driver upgrade offers commendable improvements, it falls shy of a complete transformation. Yet, the performance gains, especially at no additional cost, make this update a notable win for current Pixel 10 users. As smart cities embrace advanced technologies, these enhancements showcase how urban innovation can positively impact everyday life, one driver update at a time.
