    Quick Takeaways

    1. Reddit is exploring user verification methods to distinguish humans from bots, with options like biometric Face ID or Touch ID being considered for lightweight verification.
    2. Other potential methods include third-party decentralized services, or more intrusive ID-checking systems, reflecting a range of verification intensities.
    3. The platform aims to balance verifying humanity while maintaining user anonymity, acknowledging this as an ongoing challenge.
    4. Reddit’s co-founder expressed surprise at the idea of requiring Face ID but recognizes the necessity to combat bot-driven fake content.

Reddit is considering new ways to confirm users are real humans, aiming to fight its growing bot problem. According to Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, the company is exploring several verification options. These methods range from simple biometric checks to more detailed identity checks.

Huffman explained that lightweight options like Face ID or Touch ID could verify a user by requiring physical interaction. For example, a user would need to look at their phone or touch the screen. Such techniques could easily prove that a real person is behind the account.

The platform is also looking at more advanced solutions. These include third-party services that don’t require personal identification or more burdensome ID-checking tools. Huffman emphasized that the goal is to find the right balance, keeping user anonymity in mind.

Bot accounts have flooded sites like Reddit in recent years. Some bots even conduct secret experiments without user knowledge. While Reddit wants to verify humans, the platform also values its users’ privacy. Huffman said, “We don’t know your name, but we want to know you’re a person.”

Reddit’s co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, commented on X that Face ID wasn’t expected but acknowledged the need to address fake content. He added, “It’s hard to sell face-scanning to Redditors who want to stay anonymous.”

This ongoing discussion highlights a broader move toward smarter cities and urban innovation. Verifying identity securely can help improve online safety and trust—key elements in developing smarter, more connected communities.
