    Fast Facts

    1. Prevalence of Substance Use: Approximately 22% of young adults in the U.S. use cannabis or alcohol to help fall asleep, with cannabis being the more frequent choice.

    2. Gender and Race Disparities: Women are nearly twice as likely to use cannabis for sleep compared to men, while Black young adults are three times more likely to use alcohol for sleep than their white counterparts.

    3. Negative Sleep Effects: Both substances can disrupt sleep quality, alcohol fragments sleep and impacts REM stages, while cannabis influences sleep architecture, leading to a less restful experience overall.

    4. Alternative Solutions: Experts advocate for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as a first-line treatment, promoting sustainable sleep habits over reliance on substances.

Cannabis and Its Role in Sleep Initiation

Recent research reveals a growing trend among young adults using cannabis to aid sleep. About 22 percent of individuals aged 19 to 30 in the United States report relying on cannabis or alcohol for this purpose. Interestingly, cannabis is the favored choice. The study shows women use cannabis nearly twice as often as men, and certain groups report higher usage rates. Black young adults, for example, are three times more likely to use alcohol for sleep compared to their white peers. This highlights the need for awareness around access and care quality.

    The Impact on Sleep Quality

While cannabis may help people fall asleep faster, it does not guarantee better sleep quality. Substances can disrupt sleep cycles, leading to fragmented rest and a lack of refreshed feelings the next morning. Experts caution that long-term use may worsen sleep issues and increase addiction risks. Instead of chasing quick fixes, effective methods like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) can provide sustainable improvement. Such approaches focus on correcting sleep patterns and promoting lasting habits, steering individuals toward healthier sleep solutions.
