During its decade with NASA, the C-130 supported various scientific research and logistics missions, logging approximately 1,820 flight hours.
- Additional NASA aircraft will be relocated to Langley Research Center in Virginia as part of ongoing fleet management efforts.
NASA’s C-130 Hercules, affectionately known as the Herc, soared into the skies at 9:45 a.m. on April 18. This marked its farewell from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia after ten impactful years. Now, it embarks on a new mission in California, transitioning to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).
This transition reflects a broader strategy within NASA to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. By consolidating its aircraft fleet, the agency aims to streamline its resources while still supporting vital missions.
David L. Pierce, the director of Wallops Flight Facility, expressed pride in the C-130 and its dedicated team. He noted, “While our time with this amazing airframe has come to a close, I’m happy to see it continue serving the nation in this new capacity with CAL FIRE.”
The C-130, which was built in 1986 and joined NASA in 2015, has a rich history. Over the last decade, it contributed to airborne scientific research, logistics support, and technology demonstrations. It logged around 1,820 flight hours, participating in numerous missions worldwide.
Looking ahead, other aircraft based at Wallops will also relocate. They will move to NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, in the coming months.
The transition of the C-130 not only marks a new chapter for the aircraft but also highlights the vital role technology plays in public safety. As CAL FIRE integrates the Herc into their operations, it will continue to enhance forest management and firefighting strategies in California.
