    Top Highlights

    1. Software engineering job listings have fallen to a five-year low, now at 65% of January 2020 levels, with vacancies 3.5 times fewer than the mid-2022 peak.

    2. The decline is influenced by widespread adoption of AI coding tools, with 75% of engineers using AI assistance, leading to productivity gains reported by companies like Salesforce.

    3. While the overall job market has grown by 10% since 2020, software development is declining alongside other tech sectors like marketing (-19%) and hospitality (-18%).

    4. In contrast, traditional industries such as construction (+25%), accounting (+24%), and electrical engineering (+20%) are experiencing significant growth during the same period.

Software engineering job openings have hit a troubling milestone. Recently, these postings reached a five-year low, with listings on Indeed falling to just 65% of their January 2020 levels. This decline starkly contrasts with other tech-adjacent fields, making it notable.

Multiple factors contribute to this downturn. First, the widespread adoption of AI coding tools plays a significant role. In fact, 75% of engineers now report relying on AI assistance. As these tools become more integrated into workflows, companies need fewer engineers to achieve their goals. Moreover, a broader recalibration in the tech industry follows aggressive hiring practices during the pandemic. Companies are now focusing on efficiency rather than just expanding their workforce.

Interestingly, while sectors like software development see a decline, other industries thrive. For example, construction has grown by 25%, and both accounting and electrical engineering have also seen substantial increases. In contrast, marketing and hospitality have experienced declines of 19% and 18%, respectively. This divergence highlights shifting economic demands and priorities.

Notably, companies like Salesforce have maintained flat engineering headcounts while reporting productivity gains of up to 30% due to AI tools. This trend raises questions: Are there still opportunities for growth in software engineering, or is the market permanently altered?

Internationally, the story mirrors developments in the United States. Canada shows a similar pattern of declining software engineering roles. Meanwhile, Europe and Australia experience relative resilience, albeit still below their peak levels.

Job seekers should remain vigilant. They may need to adapt their skills or explore opportunities in more traditional sectors. The economic landscape will continue to evolve, and careers might need to shift accordingly.
