This mission carried the Starlink 12-20 payload, which included 13 satellites with direct-to-cell capability aimed at enhancing internet access.
Shortly after liftoff, the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage returned to Earth. About eight minutes post-launch, it touched down on SpaceX’s droneship, “Just Read the Instructions,” approximately 250 miles off the Florida coast. Unfortunately, the booster, designated B1086, tipped over due to an off-nominal fire that compromised one of its landing legs.
Despite this setback, SpaceX remains optimistic. The team plans to analyze the incident to improve rocket reliability in future missions. Notably, this launch marked the fifth flight for the B1086 booster. It previously completed three Starlink missions and two others for different purposes.
Meanwhile, the Falcon 9’s upper stage succeeded in deploying the satellites about 65 minutes after takeoff. This latest batch contributes to SpaceX’s expanding network of space-based broadband satellites, designed to deliver high-speed internet globally.
With this launch, SpaceX has completed 26 Falcon 9 missions in 2025, 19 of which were dedicated to the Starlink program. Overall, the company operates over 7,000 Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit, underscoring the rapid advancement in technology aimed at bridging the digital divide.
