    2. Keynote Highlights: Peter Shor presented on quantum error correction’s impact on quantum computing, while Erik Lucero showcased advancements in scalable quantum error correction, emphasizing practical improvements in quantum logic performance.

    3. Community Engagement: The in-person format of QuARC enhanced networking opportunities, allowing attendees to build connections and engage in meaningful discussions within the quantum community, a significant shift from the previous year’s virtual event.

    4. Student-Led Organization: The conference, organized by MIT’s iQuISE program and co-sponsored by various MIT labs, highlighted the leadership of students and postdocs, marking a new tradition and significant achievement in quantum engineering at MIT.

QuARC 2023 Explores Innovations in Quantum Science

MIT News reported on the successful second QSEC Annual Research Conference (QuARC), held on Jan. 23 and 24 at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire. This event gathered MIT students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and industry partners to discuss advancements in quantum information science and engineering.

QuARC serves as a platform for collaboration within the Quantum Science and Engineering Consortium (QSEC). William D. Oliver, director of the Center for Quantum Engineering, expressed enthusiasm about the diverse quantum community at MIT. He emphasized the importance of networking with colleagues from various institutions, including MIT Lincoln Laboratory and other industrial partners.

The first night featured a keynote address from Peter Shor, who spoke about quantum error correction. Shor, known for developing the Shor Algorithm in 1994, highlighted the evolution of error correction techniques essential for building practical quantum computers. His talk illustrated how these innovations pave the way for future technologies.

On the event’s second day, Erik Lucero, a lead quantum engineer at Google Quantum AI, shared insights on suppressing quantum errors through scaling. His team’s recent breakthroughs mark significant strides in achieving lower logical error rates necessary for computation. Lucero’s remarks energized attendees, showcasing the practical implications of their research.

Attendees, including grad student Hamza Raniwala, found the talks inspirational. He noted that the combination of theoretical and experimental discussions deepened excitement for future developments in quantum science.

Organized by the Interdisciplinary Quantum Information Science and Engineering (iQuISE) program, QuARC 2023 embraced in-person engagement. Co-chair Yuqin “Sophia” Duan remarked on the value of face-to-face interactions, citing the social connections made during the event. Informal discussions over lunch provided opportunities to network, enriching the conference experience.

The event featured topical sessions, led by graduate students focusing on areas like solid-state defect engineering, quantum sensing, and machine learning. This structure fostered collaboration and shared knowledge among participants.

Marc Baldo, RLE director, commended the inaugural in-person QuARC as a major success. He praised the student leaders for their initiative and dedication. The conference not only celebrated RLE’s 75th anniversary but also established a new tradition for the MIT community.

QuARC 2023 coincided with the Microsystems Annual Research Conference (MARC), inviting participants to explore a wide range of research in materials and devices. This integration of events amplified the impact of technological advancements present at MIT, further enhancing collaboration and innovation in quantum science.

As the quantum landscape rapidly evolves, conferences like QuARC play a crucial role in connecting emerging talent with established leaders. These interactions foster growth, creativity, and the potential for groundbreaking technologies in the future.
