    Fast Facts

    1. Vending Machine Innovation: Amazon is launching Pharmacy Kiosks in One Medical offices, allowing patients to pick up medications immediately after appointments, starting in December.

    2. Immediate Access: The initiative aims to reduce the percentage of unfilled prescriptions by providing on-site access to medications, making them available within minutes via the Amazon app.

    3. Subscription Benefits: One Medical subscriptions cost $9/month for Prime members and $199/year for others, with current discounts available for Prime customers, facilitating access to services.

    4. No Extra Costs: There are no additional fees for using the Kiosks, and patients can consult pharmacists through the app, enhancing the overall healthcare experience.

Amazon Introduces Prescription Vending Machines in Los Angeles

Amazon will soon launch prescription drug vending machines, starting this December. Initially, these Amazon Pharmacy Kiosks will operate within One Medical practices in the greater Los Angeles area, with plans for expansion underway. This innovative approach aims to make medications available immediately after a doctor’s appointment.

Transitioning from traditional pharmacies to kiosks may help address a significant challenge. Many patients fail to pick up their prescriptions. By providing medications at the point of care, Amazon hopes to increase adherence and improve health outcomes. Clinicians can feel more confident that their patients will receive necessary treatments.

Using the Amazon app, One Medical customers can request their prescriptions as soon as their doctor prescribes them. Most medications will be ready for pickup within minutes, streamlining the process. However, patients must have an Amazon Pharmacy account and visit a participating One Medical location for this service.

The vending machines will stock a variety of medications, including antibiotics and blood pressure drugs, but will not include controlled substances or items needing refrigeration. Users can view pricing and possible deductions before checkout, ensuring transparency in costs. Additionally, patients have the option to consult an Amazon Pharmacy pharmacist through video or phone if needed.

For those interested in One Medical’s services, memberships start at $9 a month for Prime members or $199 for non-members. Currently, Amazon offers a $30 discount for Prime customers. While patients can schedule virtual appointments without a membership, accessing the Kiosk will require an initial visit to One Medical.

With this initiative, Amazon is further establishing itself as a comprehensive healthcare provider. The move reflects a broader trend towards smart cities and urban innovation, emphasizing accessibility and efficiency in healthcare delivery.
