    Quick Takeaways

    1. Career Journey: Lindy Garay leveraged her electrical and software engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin to forge a 25-year career at NASA, starting with software development for the International Space Station training simulator.

    2. Leadership Role: As a training systems software architect, Garay leads a team that integrates training simulations from NASA’s partners with those at Johnson’s Mission Training Center, impacting critical programs like the International Space Station, Commercial Crew, and Artemis.

    3. Recognition: Recently honored as a 2025 NASA Space Flight Awareness Program Honoree, Garay was acknowledged for her significant contributions to human spaceflight, particularly in developing realistic training simulations for mission operations.

    4. Teamwork & Motivation: Emphasizing the importance of teamwork, communication, and adaptability, Garay inspires others to remember the mission’s significance, especially as NASA prepares for ambitious goals like returning to the Moon and heading to Mars.

Lindy Garay: Supporting Space Station Safety and Success

Lindy Garay always knew she wanted to develop software. However, she did not anticipate her work would contribute to human spaceflight. After earning her electrical and software engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin, she embarked on a journey at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Her first job involved creating software for the International Space Station Program’s training facility simulator.

Initially, Garay did not have a background in aerospace. Despite this challenge, she learned from her teammates who had the necessary experience. “Every successful endeavor depends on having a solid team of dedicated people working toward one goal,” she said. This teamwork not only fosters innovation but also enhances communication and flexibility.

Today, Garay works as a training systems software architect. She leads a team that connects training simulations from NASA’s external partners to those run by Johnson’s Mission Training Center (MTC). Currently, the MTC supports training for multiple programs, including the International Space Station, the Commercial Crew Program, and Artemis missions.

Her recent recognition as a 2025 NASA Space Flight Awareness Program Honoree highlights her contributions to flight safety and mission success. This prestigious award reflects her dedication, particularly in projects involving the High-Level Architecture simulation framework. This framework allows NASA to create realistic simulations for various space operations.

Garay celebrated her achievement alongside 36 other agency honorees at a special ceremony in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Furthermore, she attended the launch of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-10 mission at Kennedy Space Center, an unforgettable experience for her.

Outside her professional life, Garay supports Houston’s sports teams and enjoys traveling to see them play. She looks forward to the Artemis Generation as NASA prepares for its missions to the Moon and beyond. “Always remember the importance and the magnitude of the whole mission,” she advises.

Garay’s journey shows how technology can transform human exploration. Her work contributes significantly to ensuring a safe and successful future for space travel.
