Sustasia Fashion Prize Unveils Winner at Shanghai Fashion Week

SHANGHAI — This Friday, the inaugural Sustasia Fashion Prize will reveal its winner during Shanghai Fashion Week. Eight talented Asian designers will present their innovative works, all aimed at promoting sustainability in fashion. The event is a collaboration between the Shanghai Fashion Designer Association and Yehyehyeh, a sustainability agency led by Shaway Yeh.

The finalists hail from seven countries, showcasing diverse creative perspectives. Designers include Tommy Ambiyo Tedji from Indonesia, Pratyush Kumar from India, and Kha Hoang Ngo from Vietnam. Other notable contenders are Jaggy Glarino from the Philippines, Karmuel Young from Hong Kong, Angel Chen and Ruohan Nie from mainland China, and Tetsuya Doi from Japan.

A distinguished panel of judges will evaluate the finalists’ works. The panel features industry veterans like Andrew Wu, president of LVMH Greater China, and Li Na, a celebrated Chinese tennis icon. This expert group will assess the designs based on creativity, sustainability, and market viability.

The winner will receive a cash prize of 100,000 renminbi, roughly $14,000. Additionally, the recipient will gain access to supply chain and retail support, enhancing their impact on the fashion industry.

Finalists have collaborated with leading producers of sustainable materials for their designs. Notable contributors include Oleatex, which specializes in plant-based leather, and InResst, known for recycled nylon made from ocean waste. These partnerships emphasize a commitment to innovation and eco-friendliness.

Yeh believes this intersection of design and sustainable technology is crucial for the industry’s future. By connecting designers with cutting-edge material producers, she sees potential for real-world applications of laboratory innovations. "We aim to demonstrate how diverse and beautifully crafted sustainable fashion can be," she stated.

The exhibit showcasing the finalists’ creations will run from Saturday through April 6 at Suhe Haus, a historic venue and art hub. This event presents a unique opportunity to explore how fashion can evolve alongside technological advancements, all while addressing pressing sustainability challenges in the industry.
