Teen Builds Award-Winning Virtual Reality Prototype Thanks to Free MIT Courses

In a remarkable achievement, 18-year-old Freesia Gaul has developed an award-winning virtual reality (VR) prototype, showcasing the transformative power of accessible education. At just 14 years old, Gaul discovered MIT Open Learning’s OpenCourseWare, which offers free online courses from over 2,500 MIT classes. This platform fueled her thirst for knowledge, especially during her education in various schools across Australia and Canada.

While adjusting to different educational systems, Gaul immersed herself in online learning. “Knowledge exists beyond a curriculum,” she said. Her journey began with foundational electrical engineering courses. Besides focusing on circuits, she explored linear algebra and even quantum physics.

Transitioning from student to innovator, Gaul created a glove that functions as a Bluetooth keyboard. This device allows users to type in the air, combining her interests in VR and robotics. Her early prototype, built in her college dorm room, captured attention and won the People’s Choice award at the SxSW Sydney 2025 Tech and Innovation Festival.

Gaul co-founded a tech startup called On Zero, named after her childhood blog. She views technology as a tool for empowerment. “I want to inspire creative freedom,” she expressed. She considers her success a reflection of those who helped her along the way, particularly through programs like OpenCourseWare.

This story highlights the importance of accessible education in advancing technology. By leveraging available resources, young innovators like Gaul push boundaries and create solutions that benefit society. As they foster creativity, they also set the stage for future technological advancements.
